I first encountered Toothless as a podcast at Podiobooks. I remembered the story, particularly the ending and wanted to reread it. I encountered a book rich in sadness and loss. Toothless himself is struggling to remember himself as he ages. Struggling to remember his dead wife and child, who were killed by the Black Yew through its plague. The same Black Yew that now holds Toothless as one of its few "Sentients" that direct its conquest of Europe.The story itself is marvelously crafted and the end is so poignant. Thank you, J.P. This is a marvelous book.

I listened to the audio version from Audible.com - I couldn't wait for my commute each morning! Now I'm buying the version.
The writing brings this world to life- I feel like I've seen this as a movie - that's how easy it was to visualize from his descriptions. Often surprising, it kept my full attention. My only disappointment is that I didn't find a bunch more by J.P. Moore when I logged on just now to buy Toothless for my . Get writing man! I want more of this world.
In 1180 A.D. France, the Black Yew leads an army of undead, killing indiscriminately. A select few who are cut down are brought back to life. Martin, former Templar, is now Toothless, an undead soldier with a special connection to the Yew. He seems destined to lead the fallen, but just as the paths in life can be circuitous, so wind the paths of the afterlife.
The bulk of the tale is told through the eyes of Toothless, but in part two, we are treated to the perspective of a young female seer, Lil, whose deformities and visions lead locals to believe that she may be responsible for attracting recent attacks from the forces of evil.
Toothless is not your typical zombie tale. It starts off with shades of melancholy as palpable as that of Frankenstein's monster, and explodes into holy warfare that calls into question the very meaning of life, and whether that meaning can subsist through death. As the author has written in the acknowledgments, "[i]f Toothless is about anything, it is about a wife who inspires, children whose love redeems, and the power of friendship." I found that to be wholly accurate.

Plot Summary In 12th century France, a Templar knight named Martin dies in battle against a magical foe called the Yew. This enemy does not let the dead rest in peace however, and they harvest the mostly intact corpses and reanimate them. Martin died of a tremendous blow to the face that sheered off his lower jaw and upper teeth, so when he rises as the walking dead he is renamed Toothless. He retains barely any memories of his past life, and he takes up his broadsword in the service of the sentient Yew tree, which feeds off death. It seems that the annihilation of humanity is all but assured when Martin starts to regain his lost memories, and he breaks from the compulsion of the Yew.
Toothless is the best zombie novel I've read all year, and I think that's just a little ironic considering that the hero cannot even speak. Toothless is mute to the world, but even as a zombie he still has a spark that sets him apart. The sad horror is that he retains enough of his humanity to realize that he has become a monster. He's not oblivious like the vast horde of shamblers who make up the Yew's army, and although his self-awareness isn't all that unusual, it quickly becomes apparent that Toothless's connection to the giant Yew tree is the strongest of all.
It broke my heart to see Toothless absorbed into the Yew's army, and every time he slaughtered men, women, and children I hated the Yew even more for taking humanity's best warriors and using them like tools. The supernatural elements were intelligently combined, and in addition to zombies, the Yew used plague, demons, and werewolves against the dwindling humans, whom I might pity more if they weren't so stupid. It's to be expected from a time and place when education was limited to a small elite, and most villagers were superstitious and ignorant. Instead of banding together, the survivors start preying on each other and thereby made the Yew's job laughably easy.
That's where the Templar knights come in. They were educated, highly trained, and willing to serve a higher purpose, and Toothless's connection to them in his former life becomes critical to the story. So does his unlikely relationship with a deformed human girl who could easily have been branded a witch if not for the Templar's protection. The story kept branching off onto unseen paths, but author J. P. Moore kept it flowing beautifully. Toothless is an intelligent kind of horror story that I seldom encounter, and like Frankenstein, I weep for the monster, not the humans.
Excellently written, intriguing and well developed. I particularly enjoy Moore's highly descriptive style, which really tells the story behind the story. A very good read. (However, it is also available on MP3 on librivox, and is read by the author.)
This is possibly the finest zombie story ever written. Moore is both a compelling storyteller and a master of poetic prose, and achieves what so many attempt and fail - to make an antihero a truly convincing and sympathetic lead character, despite the fact that he is a zombie in service to the demon lord that is intent on obliterating humanity from the wasted face of a medieval Europe overrun by the fell hordes. For any fan of dark fantasy, this book is a must read.
Also worth owning just for the outstanding artwork by Scott Purdy, and the beautiful production by Dragonmoon Press.
Surprisingly good book. Went into it expecting little and came out impressed. Very well written.
The book starts of pretty strong but becomes sort of pedantic toward the middle and end. Also, the characters don't seem very likable and have no clear motive as to anything they're doing. The action and concept are cool, but the execution isn't the best.
